2016 Narrative Filmmaking Program

Over the course of the 2016 Film2Future program, students were introduced to a curriculum that covered multiple facets of the narrative filmmaking process. Participants learned story structure, theme, creating characters and how to write a screenplay.

Students then learned basics of budgeting, scheduling and breaking down screenplays for production and then moved on to technical days with camera, lighting and sound equipment.

Our class of 19 split into five groups; each group worked with industry professionals to conceptualize, write and produce a five minute short film.  Within each group, each student chose their role of Producer, Director, Sound Mixer or Director of Photography. We are thrilled to report that we had four female directors, three female DPs and two of our students even started a production company together!

Our students’ films covered complex subjects well beyond their years—human trafficking, interfaith marriage, coming out to religious parents, pursuing unsupported dreams, and battling AIDs while living on the street.

After completing physical production, the students moved on to post-production and were taught editing, sound mixing and music composing skills needed to complete their short films.

We hosted 23 expert panels covering all aspects of the entertainment business including writing, directing, acting, editing, camera operating, sound mixing, obtaining representation, producing an independent film, and working in television and digital media. Over 80 industry leading speakers shared their experience, wisdom, and origin stories-- including two Oscar® Award winners and a Nominee, an Emmy® Award Winner and two Nominees.
